What is Child Counseling?

Child therapy is a branch of psychotherapy focused on the psychological needs of children and adolescents. Just as with adults, there are times when children need the expertise of a psychotherapist - children's therapy was developed to fill this need.

How we meet the needs

We employ experienced therapists with a passion to work with children and adolescents. As licensed professional counselors, our therapists are able to identify key developmental needs of children and are able to accurately gauge when a child may need extra support. Our child therapists have been trained specifically on evidence-based treatment methods for children. One of the main goals of a therapist that supports adults is to point out different ways to help them process and cope with emotions, our child therapists utilize many of the same tactics to achieve this goal for children. Our therapists are trained in a variety of different treatment modalities and we tailor each session to the specific needs of your child.

Types of Children’s Counseling

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - This type of therapy that examines the thought process of a child, establishing the idea that thoughts influence behavior. CBT helps children to recognize negative or harmful thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts. Being able to recognize the ‘dark spots’ in their mind better equips a child to respond to and think through problems clearly.

  • Social Skills Training - Specifically designed to help children who struggle with social interaction and feeling uncomfortable in everyday social situations, social skills training breaks down complex behaviors into smaller, more manageable pieces, building layer upon layer until the skill is mastered.

  • Trauma-Focused and Trauma-Informed Therapy - As the name suggests, this therapy is aimed at helping children who have experienced severe trauma. Many children experience trauma which can lead to developing significant emotional health problems such as, post-traumatic stress disorder, fear, anxiety, or depression. Through uses of trauma-sensitive interventions with cognitive behavioral, family, and humanistic principles and techniques, trauma-focused therapy can be successful at treating these problems.

  • Grief Counseling - This therapy is useful to children who have experienced recent loss. Because all children are at different stages of understanding loss, a therapist is able to help walk a child through the emotions, challenges, and needs they may be feeling. Ultimately, being able to navigate the grieving process and feel the freedom to express their sadness is the goal.
